Problem definition

In view of the visible effects of climate change in Germany and the undeniable need for action, municipalities are looking for ways to implement concrete and effective measures to protect the environment. Municipalities have the potential to initiate sustainable changes in areas such as urban planning, transportation, energy supply, waste management and green space design and thus ensure fair living conditions in society.

At the same time, however, municipalities are confronted with a variety of challenges that hinder their decision-making process. For example, the information available for the selection and implementation of climate protection measures is often confusing and of varying quality. In addition, financial and human resources are often limited.

Objective

There is currently a lack of scientifically sound decision-making aids for German municipalities that are tailored to local conditions in Germany. Municipalities as decision-makers also lack opportunities for time- and cost-efficient comparisons with similar municipalities. The KommMa tool is intended to provide such a well-founded decision-making aid.

Method

To overcome these limitations, KommMa aims to create a dynamic database of measures that have been scientifically and transparently evaluated. This pragmatic approach provides local authorities with a concrete tool to achieve their climate protection goals as efficiently and effectively as possible.
